Ingredient Focus: Pomegranate Seed Oil

Pomegranates can be used in a variety of dishes, from puddings to savoury mains - and this versatility gives us a clue as to the wealth of ways it can benefit our bodies, too. The delicious fruit yields a fantastically beneficial extract as well as an oil that’s cold-pressed from the seeds, both of which can be used in skin and hair care.

Whilst we use both in our products, Pomegranate Seed Oil is our focus today. It can be used as a standalone ingredient or combined with other powerful actives to achieve a specific effect.

There is evidence of the existence of pomegranate trees dating back as early as 4,000 B.C. With their origin being traced back to the Mediterranean region, they are known as one of the healthiest fruits around.

Pomegranates have been used in medicine for years - with it being used to lower fever in Ayurveda and to address diabetes in Greek medicine. When Pomegranate seeds are pressed they produce Pomegranate Seed Oil which is often used in skin and hair care because of its many beneficial properties.

    How Does It Work?

Pomegranate Seed Oil is a fantastic addition to moisturising products as it heals and maintains the outer layer of the epidermis whilst nourishing the deeper layers of skin, meaning moisture is retained for longer.

It boasts a huge dose of antioxidants - around the same amount as Green Tea. These antioxidants help to fight free radicals and prevent the damage they can cause - such as wrinkles. The oil can also stimulate the production of keratinocytes. These are cells that have the primary function of forming the skin barrier to prevent external damage. This then boosts the production of new skin cells, prompting the old cells to be shed from the skin.

Benefits of Pomegranate Seed Oil for Skin

Pomegranate Seed Oil has amazing moisturising benefits which means that it is great for hydrating normal-dry skin. We use it in our Daily Renew Facial Cream in a mix of organic oils including Pomegranate Seed alongside Argan, Sunflower and Apricot oils. These all work together to lock moisture into the skin and leave skin feeling soft and restored.

This oil also has the added benefit of containing estrogen. This aids collagen production and can improve your skin’s texture, leaving it feeling more plumped and smooth. We use Pomegranate Seed Oil in our Hyaluronic Acid 200. This hydrating serum will help to plump up fine lines and wrinkles alongside softening and protecting your skin.

Pomegranate Seed Oil is also a non-comedogenic. This means that it isn’t likely to clog pores and cause breakouts - even if you use it on oily skin. It sinks deeper into the skin so it will leave minimal residue on the surface. This benefit alongside the oil’s anti-inflammatory properties and boosted production of keratinocytes helps to accelerate wound healing and reduce the appearance of scars and breakouts.

It also contains Punicic Acid, which is an omega-5 fatty acid. aThe high content means that the anti-inflammatory effects of the oil don’t just work on blemishes. It’s a great oil to choose if you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, as it hydrates the skin whilst soothing the redness and inflammation. In fact, it’s even a good remedy for sunburn - though of course we strongly advise trying not to burn in the first place!

Does It Have Any Side Effects?

When you use Pomegranate Seed Oil topically it is rare that you will experience any side effects.  However, it is of course still possible that you can experience irritation and rashes. Before using any new product we would recommend you do a patch test 24 hrs beforehand to see if any reaction occurs.

Which Skin Type is it Suitable for?

Pomegranate Seed Oil is suitable for all skin types, including both dry and oily skin. As it is deeply hydrating it is great to use on dry skin to lock in that much needed moisture. However, if you have oily skin you might be worried that using oil on top of it may make it worse. But as we mentioned earlier - Pomegranate Seed Oil is a non-comedogenic. This means that rather than sitting on top of the skin’s surface it sinks deep into the skin’s layers whilst not clogging pores.

It is also great for mature skin as it improves skin’s elasticity and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by aiding collagen production and leaving your skin plumped.
