Tahitian Monoi Oil for Hair
For the next installment of our focus on ingredients series, we thought we would introduce you to a key, exotic ingredient of ours… Tahitian Monoi.
Monoi is actually a beauty secret that has been around for centuries, but is only produced in Tahiti, French Polynesia. It has been used for millennia for its many medicinal properties and is very culturally valuable.
It’s made by macerating Tahitian gardenia pilstils (also known as tiaré flowers) in pure extra virgin coconut oil for approximately a month. The flowers are carefully hand-picked before they have opened to ensure the quality of the oil.
There is also a minimum amount of tiaré flowers that have to be used in order to obtain Monoi certification in Tahiti (15 flowers per litre of coconut oil)!

A tropical, delicate-scented natural oil packed with vitamin E, Monoi oil is highly beneficial to both the hair and the skin. It boasts both moisturising and soothing properties, which is why we have carefully selected this exotic oil for our Nourishing Hair Elixir, Tropical Blossom Body Polish, Satin Body Gloss and Tropical Blossom Body Butter. (We've actually just added Monoi to our Nourishing Hair Elixir!)
As a natural ingredient, Tahitian Monoi is free from sulphates, parabens, silicones and all other ‘nasties’, and has a whole host of benefits and uses.
Monoi oil can be used to help moisturise the skin and soothe sunburn, reduce inflammation, relieve dry and itchy skin, soothe eczema and rashes and can help the skin to appear more supple and soft.
Whilst we use Monoi as a precious ingredient in some of our products, it can also be used on its own too. Try using Monoi oil on the ends of dry hair, on dry elbows and knees or even on your cuticles.
How to Use Monoi Oil as a pre-shampoo hair treatment!
Tahitian people are known for their long, lustrous hair, and Monoi oil is one of their ancient beauty secrets. Whilst our Nourishing Hair Elixir may have you covered for hair styling, you can create your own pre-shampoo hair treatment to give your hair a little extra love and attention.
- Before washing your hair, pour a small amount of neat Monoi oil onto your hand and massage into your hair for a few minutes. Whilst most of the oil should be focused on the lengths and ends of your hair, don’t be afraid to use the oil on your scalp too. Massaging your scalp not only feels great and calms the mind, but it can also stimulate your hair follicles, resulting in healthy hair.
- Leave on for approximately 20 minutes (or overnight if you can!)
- Thoroughly rinse out in the shower. (Don’t forget to shampoo twice to ensure that the oil has been cleansed away!)
- After conditioning, don’t forget to add a few drops of our Nourishing Hair Elixir to the ends of towel dried hair for the ultimate hair treat!
Not sure how much oil to use? Think: less is more! Start out with less than you think you may need, and add a drop or two more at a time - a little goes a long way!
