What Is Transitional Skin?

What Is Transitional Skin?

When it comes to our skin, we can put it through many different changes and transitions throughout our lifetime. From seasonal changes, to hormonal changes - our skin is constantly adapting and that is why we need to make sure we are caring for it properly.

Since you began using various skincare products and routines, it is almost guaranteed that your skin has changed. Whether that was 1 year ago, or 10 years ago, because among other things, our skin changes rapidly with age.

But what are the different ways that our skin changes and why?

How Does Skin Change As We Age?

One of the most visible signs of ageing is our skin, from fine lines and wrinkles to age spots. But this isn’t something to be scared of, and it definitely isn’t the only way that age can affect our skin.

Our bodies are constantly renewing themselves and as we grow older that process tends to slow down. When we are young our skin tends to renew itself around every month. It takes 28 days for your dead skin cells to shed and be replaced with fresh, healthy new ones instead, but as we age our skin cell turnover slows. As this process begins to slow down we are left with a build up of dead skin cells on the surface of our skin, which can make our skin look duller.

Another process that slows down as we age is our collagen production. Our skin’s ability to repair collagen and elastin tends to decrease which means that our skin loses elasticity, leading to typical signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. An easy way to think about it is when we are young the collagen in our skin is tightly packed together, but as we age these bundles gradually become looser.

How Can Hormonal Changes Affect Our Skin?

We may all have experienced the changes our skin went through thanks to puberty, and the hormonal acne that may visit every now and again, but that isn’t the only way that hormones affect our skin.

Our skin is covered in small sebaceous glands which are what create sebum, an essential oil that keeps our skin healthy. These glands have reactors in them which actually respond to the hormones estrogen and testosterone. They are particularly reactive to androgens such as testosterone which is what we produce in excess during puberty - this is what can cause oily skin around this time. Oestrogen can also affect your sebaceous glands and is thought to stop oil production in very high doses, although more research is needed around that area.

Those of us who experience a monthly cycle may also be familiar with hormonal acne, which usually begins a week before the cycle starts and tend to calm down once it has begun and oestrogen levels are increasing and reducing that production of excess oil which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

On the other hand, the menopause can also play a role in transitional skin. The hormonal imbalance that occurs during this time can lead to dryness, and the lack of collagen can lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

Pregnancy can also play a big part in how our skin changes due to the hormonal changes and also the other changes that happen within the body. A big change you may notice apart from hormonal acne is pigmentation changes. Some areas of your skin may become darker than others, this is called chloasma and is very common during pregnancy. These changes in pigmentation are believed to be triggered by an increase in estrogen that stimulates the production of melanin.

How Can Changes In The Weather Affect Our Skin?

How the weather affects your skin really depends on your skin type. Different weather conditions can cause anything from break outs to dryness and even irritate conditions such as eczema.

Summer Skin

When it comes to warmer weather our skin’s main concern is the sun. Exposure to the sun is one of the main reasons for premature skin ageing, so making sure you wear an SPF daily will help to protect your skin against further damage. Even when it doesn’t feel really warm outside and it looks cloudy, the sun can still damage your skin!

The warm weather can also lead to breakouts. If you have oily skin then you are probably already aware that breakouts can be caused when your pores become clogged. During the warmer weather, you may have a tendency to sweat more and your sebaceous glands may also produce more sebum. If excess oils and bacteria combine on the skin, they may end up clogging our pores which in turn can lead to more breakouts.

Winter Skin

However, cold weather during the winter months often means low humidity. This can really dry out your skin. Bitter winds that often join our winters can strip your skin of the moisture it needs to keep itself hydrated.

During colder months you tend to wrap your body up in big coats, hats, scarves and gloves. But quite often your face is exposed to the elements. Meaning that your face can be left with dry sore patches due to lack of moisture, and can also appear red and feel tighter than usual. This is due to cold weather conditions triggering skin sensitivities.
