What is Combination Skin?

If you tend to have an oily t-zone but more dry cheeks then you most likely have a combination skin type.

If you want to find out how to take care of your combination skin then read on for some tips and tricks including an easy skincare routine using our vegan and natural products!

Understanding Combination Skin

Combination skin is simply having a combination of different skin types.  Some areas of your face may be oily whilst some might be normal or dry.

The best way to look after combination skin is to identify which areas of your face are more oil prone and which are more dry.  Often people will have an oily t-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and dry cheeks. Or perhaps oily areas around their nose and chin and dry areas everywhere else.

Once you have identified these areas you can then perfect your skincare routine.  Certain products are designed for more oily skin and others for more dry skin. By using specific products on certain areas of your face you can get a much better result because you are feeding your skin exactly what it needs - where it needs it.

How to know if you have combination skin

There are a few ways that you can use to identify if you have a combination skin type.

The main way that you can tell is what was mentioned earlier, if you have an oily t-zone or certain area of your face with more dry skin elsewhere.  You may also find that your skin tends to be more dry in the winter and more oily in the summer.

You could also experience changes in your skin due to hormone levels.  For example, if you are on your period and have combination skin you may be more prone to breakouts making you think you have oily skin because of clogged pores.  However, when your period stops your skin may go back to being dry and even flaky.

What causes combination skin?

Combination skin is caused by the same reason of oily and dry skin.

The more oily areas of your face are caused by an overproduction of sebum from your sebaceous glands, meaning that your skin is producing much more oil than it actually needs to stay moisturised.  Elements such as humidity can increase the production of sebum, which may be why you could be feeling a lot more oily in the summer months.

cold weather can dry out skin

In colder months your skin can be stripped of its natural moisture, which can lead to your oily areas becoming normalised but your dry areas becoming drier and more irritated and flaky.

Combination skin can also be down to your genes.  So if your parents ever had combination or oily skin then you have them to thank!

Step by step routine

With combination skin you have different skin types in one place, so you need to find the best products which are either suitable for both types - or use different products on specific areas of your face to feed it everything it needs to be nourished and beautiful.

Step One: With combination skin it’s best to start your skincare routine with a cleanser.  You could even try to double cleanse to remove all the dirt from larger pores in more oily areas and to nourish more dry areas.

You could start by washing your face using our Daily Detox Facial Wash designed for normal to oily skin.  This contains Moringa Peptides to re-balance natural oil production and Goji to moisturise the skin. You can simply massage this into your damp face and neck and wash away with warm water.

If you want to double cleanse then follow the face wash with our Liquid Crystal 2-in-1 Micellic Cleanser.  This is a 2-in liquid cleanser and toner and contains Hyaluronic Acid which holds up to 1000 times its weight in water making it a great hydrator for dry skin.  You can apply this using a cotton pad onto your clean face and neck.

Step Two: After cleansing and toning you need to use a serum designed for your skin type.  On the oily areas of your face you could use our Rainforest Rescue Blemish Serum.  This is specially designed for combination skin and contains an Amazonian blend of Acai and Copaiba which is proven to decrease sebum production and reduce the appearance of blemishes and open pores, leaving skin clear, calm and matte.

You can apply this onto your face and neck using your hands and is suitable to use both morning and night.

Step Three: The final and maybe more important step, at least for some parts of your face, is moisturising.  Moisturising is easy to forget if you have oily skin as you think you don't need it - but you do!!  Even more so if you have combination skin because the dry parts of your face are begging for moisture.

Our Daily Renew Facial Cream uses organic Argan Oil to nourish the skin, whilst it uses Hyaluronic Acid again to add moisture back into the skin.

You can apply this both day and night onto your face and neck using fingers.

What else can you do?

If you follow the easy three step routine above then you will soon enough have a morning routine that will keep your skin in check but why not treat yourself now and again to some extra care and time?

If you want that little bit of luxury then why not try our Miracle Organic Face Mask?  It contains Natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) to gently shed dead skin from the surface of the skin, leaving it smooth and radiant.  It also contains Peruvian Maca to stimulate cellular renewal, and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles whilst boosting luminosity and skin radiance.

You can pop this into your face whilst in the bath!  Just apply a thick layer onto cleansed skin and leave for 5 mins to let all those wonderful ingredients sink in.  Rinse away and admire your radiant reflection.
