We all love a good moisturiser. It can be the difference between tight, uncomfortable skin and a soothed visage, or even between our faces looking like an oil slick and having a silky matte finish. There are thousands out there to choose from though, and the choice can be a little overwhelming, so we’ve put together a guide to picking the right one for you.
Those with normal skin typically have least difficulty choosing a moisturiser, asthey’re less reliant on potent ingredients tobattleskin concerns. However, it’s still worth looking at the quality of the ingredients in your moisturiser and thinking about where they come from and what they’ll be doing to your skin.Hard working hydrators such as Hyaluronic acid are a good bet, and our Daily Renew Natural Face Cream makes good use of this, alongside Organic Argan Oil. Together, they work to protect as well as hydrate skin: we use lower weight Hyaluronic Acid, which penetrates skin more effectively and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. Meanwhile, the Argan Oil delivers a dose of Vitamin E and fatty acids, both of which repair skin. Boasting a host of antioxidants, Argan Oil also helps to improve elasticity in the skin and bestows a plump, youthful glow. Who knew a moisturiser could work this hard!
Anyone with dry skin will know that choosing the right moisturiser is essential, and should combine heavy hitting hydration with nourishing properties to improve skin’s future moisture retention. Our fantastic Multi Peptide 360 Moisture Cream uses Prickly Pear elixir to lock in hydration thanks to the high content of water-binding compounds. At the same time, it combines Cacay Oil and Cupuacu Butter to repair and strengthen the skin barrier, leaving you less likely to experience extreme dryness in the future. Think that’s the end of it? Think again! This magical cream adds both Sacha Inchi Peptides and Coconut Peptides into the mix, both of which work to smooth skin and decrease the number of wrinkles. This cream is actually part of our Age Smarter 360 range, which aims to support your skin at every age.
If you have oily skin, you might be tempted to think moisturisers aren't for you. This actually couldn't be further from the truth: oily skin is often a result of underlying dryness that is compensated for by overproduction of sebum. This sebum unfortunately often leads to congestion, and to our faces looking like oil slicks. Those with greasy skin will want to look for a water-based moisturiser, instead of an oil-based one, as it should be light enough to hydrate while not clogging pores. Our True Balance Lotion works with Hyaluronic Acid to carry water molecules deep into your skin; meanwhile, Moringa Peptides aim to rebalance sebum production. While these ingredients target the cause of oiliness, the other elements wage war on the symptoms. Ginger Plant Cells reduce the appearance of pores whilst having a mattifying effect, while Avocado Extract helps to reduce oil production - on average skin becomes 40% less oily over a three-week period.
However, not all oils work against congested skin - look out for oils like Rosehip and Nigella Seed, which complement skin's natural properties and help to nourish your face. Choosing a moisturiser is all very well and good, but what if you're planning on being outside a lot during the day? We'd always recommend wearing an SPF, and our new Climate Veil SPF 20 combines sun protection with skin replenishment. Again, this utilises the lower molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid to deeply hydrate skin, and combines this with a plethora of other gorgeous ingredients. Cacay Oil helps to support the skin barrier through its concentrations of Bioretinol and Linoleic Acid, and aids the skin barrier in locking in water. Lingonberry Stem Cells increase the natural antioxidant response of your skin and help to prevent UV damage whilst also reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improving facial firmness. Then there’s the reef-safe zinc oxide, which works as a physical block to the sun’s harmful rays. On top of all that, it's even slightly pigmented to blur imperfections on the skin and leave it looking glowing and flawless!
We like to use a moisturiser twice a day, so finding the right one for your skin is important! It’s also good to remember that you can mix and match: perhaps you prefer a light coverage in the daytime, but feel like your skin needs more moisture overnight. Try to think about the changing climates, as well: what works in summer won’t necessarily work in winter, and it’s important to listen to your skin and respond to what it needs. Hopefully the hunt for your holy grail moisturiser seems a little less daunting now!
